PSLF payments that count
PSLF will consider any kind of payment that is made, including those that are part of the federal student loan repayment programs. You must have had minimum 120 qualifying installments in the last ten-years to be qualified for this program. Set up automatic debit payments to be sure that you receive qualifying payments.
PSLF had previously required certain types of loans and repayment plans. However, the federal government recently increased eligibility requirements. It will accept late payments starting in 2007 PSLF now accepts a wider selection of loan types and repayment plans. Jon Toppen, Director of MEA UniServ, leads trainings for members on the application process for PSLF.
PSLF can also be accessed to those who have received a Deferment under the Economic Hardship Deferment. The loans they pay towards count towards PSLF when they were made before January 1st 2013. In the past, loans made through federal student loans under the Federal Family Education Loan program were not eligible for PSLF.
PSLF technically qualifies Direct Parent Plus loans so long as the parent is in a position that is eligible. But until the Direct Parent Plus Loan is converted to the Federal Direct Consolidation Loan, the parent cannot benefit from PSLF.
Recertification of employment
Recognizing employment on the PSLF form is a crucial procedure to apply for the PSLF loan forgiveness program. To be qualified for the program, borrowers must be been employed for a minimum of 10 years consecutively by an employer of public interest, such as a public agency or a non-profit. Furthermore, they need to have made at least 120 qualifying loan repayments during the time period. The applicant must fill out the PSLF form to recertify your employment. MOHELA will then review the form and notify the borrower of how many qualifying loan payments they’ve made.
You must submit the PSLF form each year, or at any time you change your job. This will make sure that you qualify for the program and will immediately transfer the loan to MOHELA which is the organization which manages the program. Once you submit the form, any documents supporting your claim that prove you are still working must be submitted.
To get the PSLF employment certificate the applicant must give your personal details. It comprises your name, Social Security Number, the date of birth and your address. The form also requires you to confirm any changes to the data by checking an option. Once you’ve completed this form, it is necessary to go through the legal acknowledgement box. This confirms that the information you provided is accurate. Finally, you have to complete and date the PSLF Employment certification form, which is sent to the Department of Education.
The process of certifying your employment status may be completed on the PSLF Form as long as you are employed in a qualified public service or government agency. This form will affect the amount of your PSLF payment or late partial payment or lump sum payments. Whether you’re employed by either a public or private company, you’ll have to complete the PSLF form before the deadline to qualify for PSLF.
