Payouts that are counted towards PSLF

The payments that count towards PSLF can be any type of payment, which includes those from federal student loans as well as repayment plans. For you to be eligible, you must make at least 120 qualifying monthly payments in the last 10 years. To make sure you’re making eligible payments, set up automatic-debit payments.

Previously, PSLF required the right type of payment and repayment plans, but recently, the federal government has extended the eligibility requirements of the program and accepted late payments from 2007 onward. PSLF now will accept loans of all kinds and repayment conditions. Jon Toppen, Director of MEA UniServ offers training to members about how to apply for PSLF.

The PSLF program is also open to people who received a deferment under the Economic Hardship Deferment Program. If these loans were issued prior to January 1, 2013, the payments are counted toward PSLF. PSLF was previously available for payments of federal student loans made through the Federal Family Education Loans Program.

PSLF is technically eligible to receive Direct Parent Plus Loans if that the parent works in an eligible occupation. But, unless the Direct Parent Plus Loan is changed to an Federal Direct Consolidation Loan, the parent is not eligible for PSLF.

Recertification

You may recertify your employment status using the PSLF form as long as you’re employed by an eligible public agency or public sector. You should note that the form may affect the amount of your PSLF payments. This is true for late partial payments and lump sum payments and PSLF payments. No matter if you work in the public sector, private enterprise or other type of employment, the PSLF application must be completed by the deadline to be eligible for PSLF.
